Simple wine meal pairings by Rosie: #1
Tonight I came home starving. I had a hamburger patty defrosted from last night. So, I decided to see what I could do with that. With a little creativity, in no time I had a scrumptious meal. I cooked the burger with some Steak and Chop seasoning (here is one of my favorites). I chopped a few portabella mushrooms and threw them in the pan next to the burger. While that was cooking, I cut up one baby cucumber, and one home grown tomato, added a little olive oil and fresh basil. Next I drizzled a little balsamic vinegar over the top. Luckily I had leftover Pesto pasta in my fridge, so I heated a little of that up. I added a slice of Brie cheese to the burger, and let it melt. Bam, I had a delicious meal!
Of course, what is a nice meal all alone? I opened up one of the recent bottles of wine from my wine club. I have had this one before, and decided to try it this time with red meat. Last time I prepared lamb chops, so I figured, what the heck?
This bottle happened to be from Italy and it is now one of my favorites. The wine is intensely delicious. From its medium dark ruby color, with big flavors on the palate. There is a bit of a raspberry and apple flavor with a hint of oak underneath. “Negroamaro” means “black and bitter”, but don’t let that description fool you. Even though this wine is richly colored, it has a medium weight in the mouth. It is delicately balanced and certainly not bitter by any means.
What is really cool about this wine is on the finish, I noticed a hint of vanilla and tart baked cherry. This made it taste wonderful with dessert, which was a flourless (gluten-free) chocolate tart, with fresh raspberries and a little vanilla ice cream! Yummy.
I forgot to take a picture with the ice cream, but you can use your imagination…
Simple wine meal pairings are fun and easy. All you have to do is use your imagination a little. What is in your refrigerator? Add a nice bottle of wine to any meal, simple or complex, and you turn it into an event, a wine experience.
